Furious Iraq demands apology as US troops are cleared of massacre

advertisement

America's alliance with the new Iraqi government was plunged into major crisis last night as the country's prime minister and its people reacted with fury to the US military clearing its forces of killing civilians during operations against insurgents. Iraqi leaders vowed to press on with their own probe into one of the most notorious American raids against extremist fighters, in the town of Ishaqi, rejecting the US military's exoneration of its forces.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

All I can say is, the sooner Bush faces reality and pulls the troops out the better.

Bush's divinely sanctioned hubris will never waver until the US electrorate demands that he does so. Unfortunately, I fear this will not happen anytime soon. American media Yellow Journalism and it's pseudo-objectivity status-quo lullabies are crafted to deform and not masses. Democracy held hostage by the uninformed.

The media with it's fake news teases. It urges us to ponders the absurd: "Does the Emperor truly wear no clothes? [!!!] That story and more on tonight's edition of "If it bleeds it leads" Action News brought to you by Halliburton and KBR."

Thanks Keld for seeding this story. Of the top of my head I can't remember observing an American news report which included an Iraqi presenting a negative assessment U.S. led coalition forces. This past weekend a female CNN embedded reporter presented a report were she present her experience with an armed unit on patrol. Basically the report went like this. I was with them. They were cautious, but during patrol a raid was carried out against what later turned out to be civilians. She goes on to report her subjective assessment of the troops psychological state regarding mortality of their actions. Not once did she share her "Counselor Troi" like assessment of the suffering Iraqis. I guess she assumed us puny non-empathic humans figure that out for ourselves via our crude aural and visual primate senses by watching the video.

Thanks, Kokayi. Another female reporter has a quite different view on the media situation in Iraq. Watch this interview with Lara Logan.

I find the known facts of the case very hard to square with a complete exoneration. Meh, our military has absolutely no idea how to win a "war of hearts and minds".

Me too, Brian. An independent investigation would be the best way to find out what really happened. I don't know if that's possible at all.
